The light energy is absorbed by specific targets within the skin, such as pigment responsible for brown spots or hemoglobin associated with visible redness and vessels.
At West, we use BBL HEROic by Sciton, the latest generation of Sciton's BroadBand Light technology.

Years of sun exposure can begin showing up as freckles, age spots, and areas of uneven pigmentation. BBL HEROic targets visible pigment to help create a clearer, more even-looking complexion. Sciton specifically identifies age spots, freckles, and sun damage among the concerns BBL HEROic is designed to address.
Redness & Visible Vessels
If persistent redness or small visible vessels are making your complexion appear uneven, BroadBand Light can target the vascular component responsible for that redness.

Is BBL the Same as IPL?
They're related, but they aren't exactly the same thing.
BBL is technically an advanced form of intense pulsed light technology. Sciton's BBL HEROic uses a broad range of wavelengths that can be filtered and controlled based on what your provider is treating. The HEROic platform also incorporates automated pulsing and Sciton's Skin Positioning System technology to assist with treatment delivery.
For our patients, though, the most important distinction isn't necessarily knowing every technical difference between IPL and BBL.
It's understanding which technology your provider is using, why they're recommending it for your skin, and their experience using it.
Is BBL HEROic a Laser?
Technically, no.
We know "BBL laser" is a phrase you'll see everywhere online, but BBL HEROic uses BroadBand Light rather than a traditional laser.
Both are energy-based treatments, but they deliver that energy differently.
This is also why we offer both BBL HEROic and MOXI™ at West. They aren't interchangeable treatments.
In very simple terms, we often think about:
BBL HEROic: pigment, brown spots, redness, visible vessels, and overall clarity.
MOXI: texture, tone, pigmentation, early signs of aging, and overall skin renewal.
Sometimes one is the clear choice. Sometimes your provider may recommend incorporating both technologies into a longer-term skin plan.
The right answer depends on your skin.
What Areas Can Be Treated With BroadBand Light?
BBL isn't limited to the face.
Sciton's BBL HEROic technology can be used on multiple areas of the body, including the face, neck, décolleté, arms, legs, back, and other areas when appropriate.
We especially want patients to think beyond the face when it comes to sun damage.
Your neck, chest, and hands often receive years of sun exposure too, and these areas can begin showing brown spots and uneven tone even when you've been diligent about caring for your face.
Your provider can evaluate the areas you're concerned about and determine what makes sense to treat.
What Should I Expect After a BBL Treatment?
Your exact experience will depend on what we're treating and the settings used.
When treating pigmentation, you may notice targeted brown spots temporarily become darker or more noticeable following treatment before gradually fading as your skin responds.
Some patients experience temporary redness or warmth after treatment as well.
Because BBL treatment plans are customized, we'll walk you through what to expect before your appointment, including pre-treatment instructions, downtime expectations, and how to care for your skin afterward.
And sunscreen is going to be important.
We want to improve existing sun damage without immediately creating more of it, so protecting your skin from UV exposure is an important part of maintaining your results.
When Is the Best Time for BBL in OkC?
There's a reason we talk so much about laser season once fall arrives in Oklahoma.
Reduced sun exposure can make the cooler months a great time to focus on correcting some of the pigmentation and sun damage that accumulated during spring and summer.
It can also be easier to stay consistent with a treatment series when your calendar isn't filled with pool days, beach trips, and prolonged outdoor exposure.
That doesn't mean BBL can only be performed in the fall and winter. Your provider will consider your recent sun exposure, upcoming plans, skin, and goals when deciding on the appropriate timing.
