Laser Treatments for Melanin-Rich Skin: Why Experience Matters

For a long time, many patients with deeper skin tones were told the same thing when it came to laser treatments:

Laser isn't for your skin.

And while there are very real reasons to be more thoughtful when treating melanin-rich skin, that doesn't mean laser treatments are automatically off the table.

Today, advancements in technology have given us more options for safely treating a wider range of skin tones. But there is an important part of that conversation that can sometimes get lost.

The technology is only part of it. The experience and education of the person using it matters too.

At West Medical Aesthetics, our Founder, Emily Bartel, RN, BSN, LE, has completed advanced training specifically focused on treating melanin-rich skin with laser technology. It's an area of education we're especially proud to bring to our patients in Oklahoma City and Edmond because every patient deserves a treatment plan built around their skin.

Why Does Melanin Matter With Laser Treatments?

Laser treatments work by delivering specific forms of energy into the skin. Depending on the technology, that energy may target things like pigment, water, blood vessels, or other structures within the skin.

Melanin is the pigment responsible for much of the color in our skin, hair, and eyes.

When someone has more melanin in their skin, certain laser and light technologies require additional consideration because the melanin within the surrounding skin can also absorb energy. That can increase the risk of unwanted changes in pigmentation, including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Research has shown that these risks can be higher in patients with deeper skin tones, making careful device selection and treatment parameters particularly important.

This is why we don't believe in looking at a concern and automatically saying, "You need this laser."

We have to look at the person first.

Your skin tone. Your pigment. Your treatment history. Your current skincare. Your lifestyle. Your goals. And, of course, the concern we're actually trying to treat.

So, Can Darker Skin Tones Get Laser Treatments?

Yes, with the right technology and an appropriately trained provider.

One of the biggest changes in aesthetic medicine has been the development of technologies that give providers more options for treating patients across a wider range of skin tones.

That doesn't mean every laser is right for every person.

It means we have better tools and a better understanding of how to use them.

For patients with melanin-rich skin, choosing a provider with specific experience in treating deeper skin tones is especially important. Treatment settings and protocols may need to be adjusted to achieve improvement without unnecessarily increasing the risk of pigment changes.

At West, this is where Emily's advanced laser training becomes such an important part of the treatment process.

MOXI for Melanin-Rich Skin

One technology we may consider for patients with deeper skin tones is MOXI™ by Sciton.

MOXI is a gentle, non-ablative fractional laser that uses a 1927 nm wavelength and targets water within the skin rather than melanin. Sciton designed MOXI for use across all skin types, including darker skin tones.

Depending on the individual patient and treatment plan, MOXI can be used to address concerns such as:

  • Uneven pigmentation

  • Melasma

  • Early signs of sun damage

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Texture

  • Early signs of aging

  • Overall skin quality

It also offers relatively minimal downtime compared with more aggressive resurfacing treatments, making it a treatment we can customize based on what your skin actually needs.

And that last part is important.

Having a technology that can treat a wider range of skin types doesn't mean everyone receives the same treatment.

Your MOXI treatment should still be customized to you.

What About Hyperpigmentation and Melasma?

This is where treating melanin-rich skin gets especially interesting.

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common concerns among patients with deeper skin tones. At the same time, inflammation itself can sometimes trigger additional pigmentation, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH.

So when someone comes to us wanting to treat dark spots or uneven pigment, simply treating the pigment as aggressively as possible isn't necessarily the answer.

We have to consider why the pigmentation is occurring, how reactive the skin may be, and which treatment gives us the appropriate balance between correction and protecting the surrounding skin.

The same is true for melasma.

Melasma is a complex pigment condition and is more common in people with skin of color. There isn't a one-treatment-fixes-everything approach, which is why we may combine in-office treatment with a thoughtful at-home skincare regimen and ongoing maintenance. Sciton specifically identifies MOXI as an option for addressing the visible signs of melasma across skin types.

This is one of those areas where patience and a long-term skin plan usually win over chasing the most aggressive treatment possible.

Not Every Laser or Light Treatment Is Right for Every Skin Tone

We want to be especially clear about this.

When we say we treat melanin-rich skin at West, we're not saying every device in our practice is appropriate for every patient.

In fact, knowing when not to use a particular technology is just as important as knowing how to use it.

Some light-based treatments work by targeting pigment directly, which requires additional caution in darker skin tones. Other laser wavelengths and technologies interact with the skin differently and may provide more appropriate options.

That's why your consultation comes first.

Rather than choosing a treatment because you saw someone's before and after online, we want to understand your skin and determine which technology, treatment plan, and settings make sense for you.

Advanced Training Matters

Technology in aesthetics continues to evolve, and we believe our education should evolve right alongside it.

Emily has pursued advanced education specifically in laser treatments for melanin-rich skin, in addition to her broader experience and training with Sciton technology.

That matters because treating different skin tones requires more than knowing how to operate a device. It requires understanding how skin may respond to energy, recognizing the potential for pigment changes, selecting appropriate treatment parameters, and knowing when a different approach may be the better choice.

It's also part of a bigger philosophy we have at West:

We don't want to simply have advanced technology. We want to be really well educated in how to use it.

What to Ask Before Getting a Laser Treatment on Melanin-Rich Skin

If you've been considering laser treatments and have a deeper skin tone, it's completely reasonable to have questions.

Ask your provider:

  • Do you regularly treat patients with my skin tone?

  • What technology are you recommending for me, and why?

  • Is this treatment appropriate for my specific skin type?

  • What is my risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

  • Do I need to change my skincare before treatment?

  • What should I avoid before and after my appointment?

  • What results are realistic for my particular concern?

A good consultation shouldn't make you feel rushed into choosing a treatment.

You should leave understanding why something is being recommended for your skin.

Fall is Laser Season at West!

As we head into laser season, this is one conversation we want more patients to feel comfortable having.

If you've avoided lasers because you've been told they're not an option for darker skin, or you're simply unsure which treatments are appropriate for your complexion, we'd rather start with a conversation than an assumption.

We'll evaluate your skin, talk through your concerns, and determine whether MOXI or another treatment option at West makes sense for you.

Because advanced technology is exciting.

But knowing how, when, and who to treat with it is what matters most.
